Sanitary Sewer Maintenance
Public Works Department employees inspect and maintain 87.7 miles of sanitary sewer, including 1,484 manholes and 58 lift stations, with an aggressive annual maintenance program. The City is constantly monitoring the condition of the sanitary sewer mains with cleaning equipment, televising the lines when a problem occurs, and replacing or lining the sanitary sewer mains when it becomes necessary. Before a new street is constructed or the reconstruction of an existing street over a sanitary sewer main begins, the pipe is evaluated to determine the condition and make sure that it is in good repair.
Property owners are responsible for the sanitary sewer line that runs from their house to the main line, which typically runs along the center of the street.
To report any issues regarding the sanitary sewer system related to the main line please contact the City of Detroit Lakes Public Works at (218) 847-4637 or dlpublicworks@cityofdetroitlakes.com from 7:00 a.m.-3:30p.m. or after hours at (218) 847-5658.
