Potentially Dangerous or Dangerous Dogs

Any dog inside the Detroit Lakes city limits may be designated as potentially dangerous if the dog, when unprovoked, bites a human or domestic animal on public or private property, chases or approaches a person in an apparent attitude of attack, or has a tendency to cause injury or threaten the safety of humans or domestic animals on public or private property.

Any dog inside the Detroit Lakes city limits may be designated as dangerous if the dog, without provocation, inflicts substantial bodily harm to a person on public or private property, kills a domestic animal while off the owner’s property, or aggressively bites, attacks or endangers the safety of humans or domestic animals after its owner has been notified the dog is potentially dangerous.

No potentially dangerous or dangerous dog shall be kept in the City of Detroit Lakes unless the owner has completed the application process to register the animal, which includes implanting a microchip and posting a sign on the owner’s property.

For concerns with a potentially dangerous or dangerous dog call the Detroit Lakes Police Dept at (218) 847-4222.
