Advisory Committees

Airport Commission

Oversees the operation, development, and management of Detroit Lakes–Becker County Airport. Operating under a joint agreement between the City and Becker County, it advises on infrastructure improvements like runway expansions, hangar construction, and zoning around the airport.

 

 

*Meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 11:30 at City Hall

Arts & Culture Commission

Advises on cultural programming, public art, and support for local performing and visual arts. It collaborates with institutions like the Historic Holmes Theatre and the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center to enhance Detroit Lakes’ cultural landscape.

 

 

 

*Meets the 4th Wednesday of each month at 4:00pm at the Becker County Museum

Detroit Lakes Library

Advises on administration, policies, budgets, and long-range capital improvements for the Detroit Lakes Public Library (a LARL branch), including oversight of the historic Carnegie building.

 

 

 

 

*Meets the first Thursday of Jan., Mar., May, July, Sept. and Nov. at 4:30pm at the Library.

Development Authority

Serves to promote commercial and industrial growth in Detroit Lakes. It works on financing, land acquisition, redevelopment, and partnerships aimed at economic expansion and job creation.

HRA Board

Addresses housing needs, particularly for low-income and disabled residents; undertakes redevelopment of blighted properties; and supports industrial and business development through housing and urban renewal projects.

 

 

 

*Meets the 2nd Monday of each month at 11:30am at the HRA Office

Park Board

Advises on park maintenance, recreational programming, and long-range capital projects for the City’s parks and open spaces.

Planning Commission

Provides guidance to City Council on zoning, land use, and comprehensive planning. Responsible for preparing and implementing the City's Comprehensive Plan and advising on long-range development initiatives.

 

 

 

*Meets the 4th Thursday of each month at 5:30pm at City Hall

Police Civil Service

Acts as an oversight body ensuring merit-based hiring, promotion, and disciplinary procedures within the Detroit Lakes Police Department. Reviews department policies and practices related to recruitment and personnel actions.

 

 

 

*Meets one a year in February and then as needed throughout the year.

Public Utilities Commission

The Public Utilities Commission is responsible for regulating and overseeing essential public services such as electricity, water, and wastewater. The commission ensures that the utilities provide safe, reliable, and affordable services. It also reviews and approves rates, monitors service quality, and enforces state and federal regulations to protect consumers while allowing utilities to operate efficiently and sustainably.

Tourism Bureau

Responsible for promoting the community as a travel destination. It works to attract visitors by marketing local attractions and amenities. The bureau collaborates with hotels, restaurants, and event organizers to boost economic growth through increased tourism and community visibility.

Sports Arena Commission

Advises on operations, programming, and facility maintenance for the Kent Freeman Arena. Works on scheduling community sporting events, rink use, and long-term facility enhancements.
