The Becker Lakes Industrial Development Corporation (IDC.) is a private, non-profit development organization that is governed by a 9-member board of Directors. The IDC has undertaken various activities to encourage economic development in the area.
Industrial Park Expansion
In 1993 the IDC acquired a 390-acre site north of Detroit Lakes for development of a new 120-acre industrial park. The IDC. planned to develop the industrial park and in 1995 undertook a $500,000 Sewer and Water Project to bring these services to a portion of the park. A 10-acre tract was sold to DL Manufacturing for the development of a new aluminum die cast business. The remainder of the industrial park property was sold to the City of Detroit Lakes. The City of Detroit Lakes Community Development Department, obtained a grant from the Economic Development Administration for 50% of the cost to develop the New Industrial park, and in 1998 completed construction of sewer, water and roads to serve 108 acres of the site.
In 2011 the City of Detroit Lakes has started construction of a 90 acre, 19 lot addition to the Detroit Lakes North Industrial Park. The IDC will continue to encourage economic development in Detroit Lakes and the surrounding area. The goal of these activities is to diversify the area’s economy and tax base, and to create new jobs in the area.
